In my fashion textiles class, we recently got a new brief to design a dress for an exhibition inspired by an artist of our choice. Naturally I looked to the 60s as I’ve been wanting to make a 60s inspired outfit for ages. I finally found a type of art that I really thought I could work with; little did I know I would see the very same thing all over the spring 2013 runways and high street windows weeks later.
Someone who had an outstanding impact on op art was Bridget Riley. Her artwork inspired many prints and patterns of the Mod era and she is still inspiring many designers today. There were exhibits of zig-zags, stripes and squares all over the Spring/Summer 2013 runways, particularly in shows by Marc Jacobs, Michael Kors and Louis Vuitton.

The trend has also made its way to the high street with must-haves at Topshop, New Look and River Island among others.
How will you be wearing op art this season?
